How is Invisalign like Harry Potter’s magic?

How is Invisalign like Harry Potter’s magic?

At Kadan Orthodontics we believe in the power of magic (big Harry Potter fans), but sometimes science is so advanced that it becomes almost indistinguishable from wizardry. Invisalign is powered by the kind of tech that can be considered magical. Get ready to step into the fantastic world of Invisalign!

Cloak your teeth with invisibility

In the beginning of his story, the young wizard is given a magic cloak. It’s a powerful bit of magic that allows the wearer to become completely invisible while wearing it. The fabric of the cloth is woven from special enchanted material for witches and wizards to render themselves unseeable. Much like the magic cloak, Invisalign appliances are made with a material that makes them virtually invisible to the naked eye. The aligners are produced from a patented flexible plastic material that was invented exclusively for Invisalign by biomechanical engineers, who we consider a special class of wizards.

Wands that scan your teeth

A standard instrument of every magic-user is the wand. It allows the bearer to focus their magic sometimes with a beam of powerful light that can produce wonderous things. Dr. Kadan works with the Invisalign scanner much like a wizard does a wand. During the Invisalign digital scanning process, the orthodontist wields a handheld device that takes a high resolution, interactive image of your teeth in 3D, snapping 6,000 images per second!

Spells and magic maps for your future smile

In one adventure, the wizards are bestowed with a magic map that tells them how to achieve their goal and avoid any pitfalls. After scanning your mouth, Dr. Kadan will use a magic spell (aka powerful computer software) to create a map for your treatment plan. Every step is plotted using multiple aligners that gently (and invisibly!) guide your teeth until they produce a perfect smile: Novos Risus! No worrying about any missteps along the way.

A potion for almost every ailment

The study of magic potions is the stock and trade of every budding wizard, seeking out ways to address any situations they may encounter and always tinkering with the formula to make it better. Invisalign has a very similar way of producing results. Over the decades of use, Invisalign technology has improved so that it can treat many cases including crowded teeth, overbites, underbites, crossbites, gap teeth, open bites and generally straighten teeth. Tinkering with the technology in the future will allow Invisalign to resolve even more problems.

Ex nihilo

The Invisalign aligners are produced from a powerful 3D scanner that seems to create the appliances out of thin air. There is no hocus pocus here though. A fleet of high-tech devices are employed to produce each and every custom-made aligner that is a perfect fit for your mouth. The technology that backs the Invisalign system isn’t magic, it just seems like it!

Meet our head wizard

If it’s smile magic you want, you have to see the right wizard. You wouldn’t go to Professor Flitwick to learn Transfiguration and you wouldn’t want Professor Binns teaching you Quidditch. Since Madam Pomfrey isn’t readily available, for the straight smile of your dreams, you want to see Dr. Kadan, he has extensive experience using Invisalign to straighten young wizards and witches teeth as well as strong experience with adult orthodontics.

Read This Before Ordering Orthodontic Treatment Online

These days you can do almost anything with the click of a button. Order school supplies. Get a ride across town. Watch your favorite movie.  Order food delivery. It seems like every day there’s a newer and easier way to do almost everything. We’ve been programmed to accept that anything can be ordered online and delivered right to your front door. However, at Sam Kadan Orthodontics, there is one thing that we believe has no easy replacement: orthodontic treatment. There is no match for a trained, experienced professional when it comes to your dental health.

The American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) agrees. They recently issued a Consumer Alert listing key questions to ask about direct-to-consumer orthodontic companies. You can download a print-friendly version here.

The issue is that many direct-to-consumer orthodontic companies do not involve the in-person evaluation and/or in-person supervision of your treatment we provide at Sam Kadan Orthodontics. This type of supervision is important because there is more to creating a healthy, beautiful smile than moving the visible portions of your teeth. If not done correctly any dental work can lead to potentially irreversible and expensive damage such as tooth and gum loss, changes to your facial profile, and other issues.

An orthodontist like Dr. Sam Kadan has many tools in his arsenal to help create your beautiful smile – Invisalign is just one of them. It’s important to have a fully qualified and certified orthodontist involved when making any changes to your teeth.

The Top 8 Questions To Ask

The AAO advises that when researching orthodontic treatment (including treatment models from direct-to-consumer companies like SmileDirectClub, Candid Co., Smilelove, SnapCorrect, Orthly, etc), you should consider many key questions, some of which include:

  1. As part of your treatment, are comprehensive diagnostic records like x-rays taken before your treatment?
  2. As part of your treatment fee, do you receive any in-person visits to a dentist’s or orthodontist’s office during your treatment?
  3. Is only one treatment type offered (such as invisible aligners or a certain appliance)?
  4. What are the possible risks (financial, health, etc.) associated with your orthodontic treatment?
  5. Who is responsible for detecting any issues that may occur during your orthodontic treatment? Is it you? If it is a doctor not associated with your treatment, who pays for those check-ups?
  6. If an emergency arises, does the company have a dentist or orthodontist in your area that you can see in-person? If not, who would cover the costs associated with seeing a dentist or orthodontist in your area?
  7. If you have a dispute involving your orthodontic treatment, how is it handled?
  8. Does the treatment model comply with the dental laws in your state? To check your state’s dental laws, click https://www.aaoinfo.org/state-laws-and-regulations. Information for your state dental board can be found at https://www.aaoinfo.org/aao/state-dental-board-info.

The Road to a Selfie-Ready Smile for Your Teen

Remember when your kid was little and you’d yell “Say cheese!” before snapping a photo? All those goofy smiles. As your child has grown into a teen, does he still smile for photos? A big, real smile showing his teeth?

All parents want their teenagers to be happy, confident and feel good about themselves. The teen years are rough! Those years of feeling awkward and insecure – don’t remind me! They say our smiles are the gateways to our hearts, but many of us are too insecure about our teeth to let our smiles shine.  Now more than ever, we have options to get your teen that selfie-ready smile before they’re off to college.

Two main questions parents and teens have about orthodontics are:

  1.     Will it hurt?
  2.     How long will this take?

Think of your options as the settings on your GPS. Whether your teen prefers the fastest route or the more enjoyable scenic route, we will get her to her destination of a straighter smile.

Fastest route

If your teen is of the mindset that the quicker the better, then braces and AcceleDent® is the way to go. You may not be familiar with AcceleDent, an orthodontics system that goes over the braces for 20 minutes each day to accelerate the work the braces are doing by up to 50%. Which means shorter time in braces!

Scenic route

If your teen is concerned about how she will look like with metal braces or if it will restrict her too much, she should ask about Invisalign® Teen. Invisalign aligners are made of nearly invisible clear plastic. Some teens also like that the aligners are removable so she can eat whatever she wants.

There is no right or wrong answer – it’s a matter of which treatment process is right for your teen. The great news is that you have options! Call our office at (215) 348-3100 or click below to schedule a consultation to get your teen a straighter smile by college!

We look forward to meeting you!

Signs That a Child is Suffering From Sleep Apnea

Does your child seem drowsy during the day? Does he or she snore or wake up breathless in the middle of the night? They could have Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) – a chronic condition where breathing stops periodically during sleep because soft tissue is relaxing and obstructing the airway. These periodic stops can happen as many as 20-30 times in an hour and cause a lack of oxygen to the brain, waking up your child so that they restart proper breathing. All that waking up can leave one pretty sleepy the next day – even if they don’t remember waking up!

Untreated, obstructive sleep apnea can affect school work and overall alertness as well as raise your child’s risk of serious health problems down the road. These include:

  • High blood pressure
  • Stroke
  • Heart disease
  • Diabetes
  • Chronic acid reflux
  • Obesity
  • and even Depression

According to the American Academy of Otolaryngology (ENTs) sleep disordered breathing affects approximately 12 percent of children.

Luckily, sleep apnea is easily treatable. It just needs to be diagnosed. That’s where you come in: if your child has any of the following symptoms, bring them to see us for a free consultation and sleep apnea test at Sam Kadan Orthodontics.

Here’s what to look for:

  • Insomnia or difficulty sleeping (tossing and turning or night sweats)
  • Loud snoring at night
  • Waking up at night short of breath
  • Long pauses in breathing
  • Chronic mouth breathing during sleep
  • Snorting or choking sounds during the night (indicating a restart of breathing)
  • Extreme drowsiness throughout the day
  • Changes in mood, misbehavior or decline in school performance
  • Hyperactivity or inattention (in some cases children who are diagnosed with ADHD are actually not hyperactive but rather are showing the clinical symptoms of OSA.

Orthodontists are leading specialists in spotting Sleep Apnea early because of our familiarity and expertise in working with the soft tissue in children’s mouths. As both an Orthodontist and parent, Dr. Kadan makes a point of asking all parents if they’ve noticed any of these symptoms when they first consult with new patients.

If your child is exhibiting any of these symptoms, bring them in for a free consultation and at home sleep test. We can help with a treatment plan and make sure your kids are sleeping soundly!

While Sleep Apnea can have very serious side effects, it’s very easily treatable. The most important thing you can do is pay attention and have your child evaluated. What are you waiting for? Give us a call at (215) 348-3100  or click below for complimentary consultation.

We look forward to meeting you!
